The Gender Games offers a multifaceted exploration of gender, not only is the book a memoir of Juno’s own self-discovery and proceeding transition, but it’s also an exploration of the role of gender in society and how gender norms are instilled and perceived right from before an individual is even born.
In telling her story, Juno adopts an honest and informative stance whilst attracting readers attention with her witty and light hearted re-iteration of her own experiences.
Whilst The Gender Games is without a doubt a memoir, it also deeply explores the impact of gender on all of society. It drives home that gender norms affects us all whether that be individuals who identify as cis, het, trans, gay or non-binary etc no one escapes the pressure of ‘gender’. It is a divisive subject and Juno does not shy away from the task at hand.
It’s worth bearing in mind that the author is predominately known for writing youth adult fiction and as such the authors ‘voice’ is more informal than a reader might expect. The book was also released in 2017 and as such I found that there wasn’t anything of a factual nature that I didn’t already know. However, Juno’s personal story was absorbing and if you have a wider interest in the gender normative, gender presentation or the role of gender in society you’ll find this book is a great all-rounder and a fairly quick read.
