The first in a series focusing on an all-women’s college in Northern Florida, The Goode Governor is my first book by J.J. Arias, and it won’t be my last.
The story focuses on female Governor Georgia ‘George’ Fernandez as she announces her re-election campaign. Unfortunately, her beard of a husband (and long-time friend) is caught leaving a luxurious gentleman’s club with exotic dancer Mila, and the timing couldn’t be worse. Thankfully, Governor Fernandez’s Chief of Staff is on hand with a solution; have Mila move into the Governor’s residence and become a member of the newly revived internship program. Mila is smart, qualified, and dancing for the money until she can get her foot in the political arena, so why shouldn’t she use this inconvenience to her advantage.
This story firmly sits in the slow burn, age gap and ice queen categories; all of which I enjoy immensely, so this book really was up my street.
Yes, the plot is implausible in reality, but the author does such a fabulous job of making a reader forget that this is the case. Mila essentially giving the Governor a lap dance in George’s home gym is the perfect case and point! The heat between the two only begins to grow from there, both on and off the political stage.
And that’s another aspect that I liked about this story – the political details of the plot are well thought out, interesting, and realistic. They add another dimension to the action and enable the introduction of other secondary characters such as, the Chief of Staff and best friend Josephine, and fellow intern, Tim, who are strong assets to the overall enjoyment of the story.
Mila unequivocally challenges George both politically and romantically. The result is a tension-filled, desire-driven need to simultaneously maintain propriety and give in to the love George has denied herself all these years.
Sparks fly throughout The Goode Governor and I can’t wait to check out more of the series.
