Poetry isn’t usually a form of literature that I’d be eager to pick up, but when Erin Zak asked me if I wanted to review her newly released poetry collection, I knew I couldn’t refuse.
Simply put Erin knows how to write emotion; how to draw someone in and make them feel what’s on the page. Whilst I know very little about the established practices of poetry writing, the contents of The space between heartache and healing reminds me of spoken word compositions; raw and emotive but in a beautiful kind of way.
I imagine that many of the pieces within this collection will likely help readers connect to their own messy emotions and personal traumas. One of my favourite pieces entitled ‘Wars’ calls out to me as the struggle between what one is personally battling and the conflicts arising in the rest of the world. It is a beautiful identification of the hardship of our own thoughts.
Erin’s reflections on her own heartache, healing, and the minutiae of the spaces in between are a tender and honest expression of some of the hardest parts of life; they’re also a comfort to those who identify with the same words, thoughts and feelings.
The space between heartache and healing is a vulnerable and powerful poetry collection which calls to be read again and again, with a pen in one hand and your journal in the other.
I received an arc of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
